I grew up between two languages. The English of my parents and the Hebrew of the country I lived in. By high school I was translating short stories for friends; by college I was reading Aristotle in one language and Maimonides in the other, and trying to make them argue.

I studied philosophy and Jewish thought at Shalem College in Jerusalem. My thesis read the biblical book of Lamentations as a study of community-based trauma recovery — a piece of close reading that I still think about. Out of college I took on translation work, and the editing followed.

What I love about this work is its patience. A good edit is a slow argument with a sentence about what it is trying to do. A good translation is a slow argument with a paragraph about who is going to read it. Neither rewards rushing, and both reward care.

Good writing is good editing.
